Charm, History + Beauty: An Ode to Jericho

I smile whenever I hear someone say they live in Jericho.

The town is small—about 5,100 people—but not too small. Jericho is not terribly touristy, but it still feels like a place you want to visit. My only negative experience there was when I got a speeding ticket while driving through town in 2007. (My bad.)

Interesting things about Jericho

Villages: Jericho Center and Jericho Corners are both on the National Register of Historic Places. There’s also the Riverside area of Underhill Flats, located on the town line between Jericho and Underhill.

Place names: There’s an area called Nashville in the southeastern part of town. Nashville had its own post office for about a decade until 1901, and as the story goes, there was a postmaster named Nash who was in charge.

Funny road names and places: Skunk Hollow Road and Huckleberry Hill

Claim to fame: Jericho was Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley’s hometown. The town of Jericho is also depicted in the show “Wednesday.” While the town in the show is fictional, it’s said to be based on real places, including Jericho, Vermont.

Odd fact: Spanning over 11,000 acres of land, the Camp Ethan Allen Training Site in Jericho is home to the Army Mountain Warfare School, one of two elite mountain training locations in the United States. The federal government obtained the land 100 years ago.

Noteworthy in Jericho

The Jericho Center Country Store first opened in 1807. It’s one of the oldest continually operating general stores in Vermont. Stop by for a sandwich, a creemee, a cup of coffee, snacks, a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer. Make sure to stroll across the street to appreciate the village green. Old Red Mill (Chittenden Mills) is now owned by the Jericho Historical Society and is home to the Snowflake Bentley Museum. The mill once supplied flour to northern Vermont, and later became a feed mill until it closed in 1946. Today, the Old Red Mill also features a half-mile hiking trail along a stream with large boulders, waterfalls, and open pools. The trail is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Mills Riverside Park encompasses 216 acres of protected land that’s open to the public. The park features a gorgeous view of Mount Mansfield to the east. You’ll also find flat terrain and an off-leash dog area, a pavilion, and hill trails for hiking and biking. A weekly farmers’ market is at the park from May to October.
