Where to Go During Vermont Maple Open House Weekend in 2026
March 07, 2026
Few places are as closely connected to maple syrup as Vermont. For generations, the practice of transforming sap into something sweet has shaped the state’s culture and landscape.
“Maple sugaring is so rewarding because you’ve actually done something. You’ve taken part of nature and you’ve turned it into a food. And, you know, I like that. I enjoy that,” says Jim Judd, of Morgan, a fourth generation Vermonter who started sugaring in the 1970s. (You can learn more about Judd’s Wayeeses Farms next week in a new Happy Vermont podcast episode).
Long before Europeans arrived, Indigenous peoples, such as the Abenaki, developed methods for collecting and processing sap into sweeteners. They used bark containers to collect sap, which they concentrated by boiling or freezing, making maple sugar for storage and trade. These skills were handed down and later shared with European settlers.

-In 2025, Vermont made 3.04 million gallons of maple syrup, more than any other state.
These days, instead of hanging buckets on trees, producers use plastic tube piping that runs from tree to tree and all the way to the sugarhouse. With vacuum pumps helping move the sap, sugarmakers no longer have to go out and collect it by hand. The piping has made the process much easier and lets producers tap far more trees than before.
In 2025, Vermont made 3.04 million gallons of maple syrup, more than any other state. Producers used 8.35 million taps, with each tap averaging about a third of a gallon. Vermont has had the most maple taps in the country every year since 1916, except for 1918 and 1926.
Every year, Vermont Maple Open House Weekend gives you the perfect excuse to check out sugarhouses all over the state. You can go on tours, try samples, and even enjoy classic treats like sugar-on-snow. This year, more than 90 spots are opening their doors on March 21-22, 2026.
