Mount Tom in Woodstock is where you’ll find mile

Mount Tom in Woodstock is where you’ll find miles of trails, scenic views, wide open fields and The Pogue, a 14-acre pond.

Mount Tom is home to the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the only national park in Vermont.

The mountain is also where the American environmental movement was born 161 years ago.

George Perkins Marsh noticed how the clearcut slopes of Mount Tom in his hometown changed shape every time a hard rain fell because of erosion.

In 1864, Marsh wrote “Man and Nature,”widely considered the first book of the American environmental movement.

Frederick Billings, another environmental visionary deeply influenced by Marsh’s book, later purchased Marsh’s boyhood home on Mount Tom.

Billings was determined to return his home state of Vermont to its natural, forested beauty. Billings restored much of his new Woodstock property to forestland, using progressive methods and planting primarily European tree species.

From the heart of Woodstock village, visitors can easily walk to the Mount Tom trailheads by Faulker Park from Mountain Avenue, the Billings Park trails from River Street, or the entrance of nearby the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park.

What I love about place names is that they have a true story or are a mix of myth, folklore and fact.

I grew up in Manchester in an area known as Purdy Hill (near or part of Skinner Hollow but just north of Wilcox Flats). The Purdys were early settlers and farmers in town.

One member of the Purdy family sold his home on Purdy Hill to Gunther Klose of New York City, who later sold it to my parents in 1976.

Every day, I think of that house, the old barn, and the wide open fields, which my father named Tanner Brook Farm (named after a small brook).

In the early 80s, my dad installed a light blue sign for Tanner Brook Farm in front of the house along Route 7A for all to see. My siblings and I felt mortified for reasons I can’t exactly remember.

My parents sold the property decades ago when they divorced. But all these years later, my brothers and sisters reminisce about living there.

The sign my dad made is long gone. But we still call it Tanner Brook.

What a place.

@thejoyshopvt It’s all joy at this Main Street shop with handmade jewelry, vintage clothing, Vermont cards, candles, art prints, unique baby gifts and kids clothing.

@sweetcharityvt is a resale shop showcasing furniture, glassware, jewelry, kitchen goods, home accessories and linens.

@dailychocolate_vt located just off of Main Street is a chocolate shop specializing in small-batch, handmade chocolates.

@luluicecream.vt is an ice cream shop offering from-scratch, small-batch ice cream and goat milk gelato, and an espresso bar.

@10_greenstreet is a wine bar and furniture showroom owned by a husband and wife team. She’s a talented winemaker and he creates modern pieces made from Vermont-harvested wood.

@parksqueeze is a neighborhood bar and eatery where you can grab a tasty burger, warm up with butternut squash ravioli or creamy mac and cheese.

@3squarescafe serves up blueberry lemon pancakes, a coconut curry scramble, a mushroom Reuben, smash burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, plus espresso and coffee drinks.

@vlaundry wood-fired bakery is the perfect place to lounge on a leisurely Sunday morning (or any day of the week). Enjoy espresso, pearl almond tarts, sourdough pain au chocolate and a cozy atmosphere.

@blacksheepbistrovt embraces you the moment you walk in the door with its cozy, elegant vibe inside or outside on the patio. Dine on duck leg confit, bistro steak or crispy tofu. The restaurant uses fresh, local ingredients and its menu is inspired by traditional French flavors.

The @vergennesoperahouse, built in 1897, is undergoing a renovation to become fully accessible with a new elevator, new walkway, ADA restroom and more.

Businesses and organizations around town will be hosting events in the 2025-26 Off Stage Series, including Bixby Library, Lulu Ice Cream, Park Squeeze, 10 Green Street, The Holt and many others.

The town of Stratton consists of 30,000 acres—65 percent of it is on national forest land.
