I spent some time in Brookfield over the weekend driving its dirt roads, walking around in Pond Village, and visiting the famous Floating Bridge.

Bear Hill is the highest point in town, where a fire tower rises above the trees.

A stone chapel sits on a wooded hill at @vontrappresort. Werner von Trapp built it between 1946 and 1950 to keep a promise he made during World War II.

He was one of the von Trapp children made famous in The Sound of Music. In the film, Werner was depicted by the character named Kurt.

If you’ve visited the family’s resort in Stowe, you may have come across the small stone chapel and wondered, why is this here?

You can reach the chapel by taking a 20-minute walk from the von Trapp resort’s Outdoor Center.

For something extra fun, you can sign up for a Hike with Goats tour. You’ll walk to the chapel with Stowe resident and guide Hannah Rushing and her herd of adorable Nigerian Dwarf goats. Follow her at @goatmaam.

It’s always a thrill to come across a Vermont stone wall.

New England once had an estimated 240,000 miles of stone walls, about the distance from Earth to the moon.

How did they get here? Glaciers left rocky deposits across much of Vermont and New England.

Farmers eventually had to clear stones every spring. Frost heaves continually brought buried rocks toward the surface, creating a new “crop” of stones each year.

Vermont was about 70% open land by 1870. Today that number is the opposite, which helps explain why so many stone walls are found in forests.

Stone walls are less common in much of the Champlain Valley, where ancient lake sediments buried much of the rocky glacial material.

The types of stones vary across Vermont, and can include granite, gneiss, schist, and quartzite.

What do you love most about Vermont stone walls?

An inn has stood on Jamaica’s Main Street for more

An inn has stood on Jamaica’s Main Street for more than 200 years.

Over time, it has served as a stagecoach stop, a lodging space for dam workers and hunters, and an Italian restaurant.

Now called the Jamaica Haus, the inn, bakery, and art gallery is once again bringing people together.

Sisters Benzi Ross and Tini Hamilton continue a family tradition of hospitality that they learned from their parents, Emo and Ann Henrich.

“I want this place to be the living room for Jamaica,” says Ross, who moved back to Vermont a few years ago after living in Colorado for decades.
